U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in collaboration with the FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, have detained a Cuban national, Daniel Morejon Garcia, who was allegedly living unlawfully in the United States. He was apprehended at his home after a probe by ICE Homeland Security Investigations that focused on fraudulent statements purportedly made during his entry into the U.S.
The investigation uncovered official documents from the Cuban government and credible sources suggesting that Morejon Garcia had not disclosed essential affiliations. Specifically, it is alleged he concealed his membership in the Cuban Communist Party and his role as an agent for Cuba's Ministry of the Interior on his immigration forms.
Furthermore, authorities claim that Morejon Garcia was the President of the National Defense Council in Cuba's Artemisa region and a member of the Rapid Response Brigades. These brigades consist of civilians trained to support the government during unrest or protests. Prosecutors allege he participated in suppressing the island-wide protests on July 11, 2021, performing duties that included assaulting protestors.
Morejon Garcia is now in ICE custody and awaits deportation proceedings.
The public is encouraged to report any known human rights abusers traveling to or within the U.S. to the ICE Tip Line, 866-DHS-2423 (866-347-2434), where anonymity can be maintained. Further updates on HSI’s immigration and customs enforcement can be followed via their account on X at @HSI_Miami.
