U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken Alejandro Salazar, a Mexican national, into custody following his release from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. Salazar, 44, was apprehended on February 21 after serving a sentence for first-degree rape.
Salazar entered the United States illegally in January 1995 without inspection by an immigration official. He was convicted by the New York County Supreme Court on November 14, 2012, for first-degree rape and received a 15-year prison sentence. On March 19, 2013, ICE filed an immigration detainer with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. An immigration judge ordered Salazar's removal to Mexico on October 17, 2013. The Clinton Correctional Facility complied with the detainer and transferred him to ICE custody.
Currently held at Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York, Salazar is awaiting deportation.
