Rep. Veronica Escobar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Texas’ 16th district since 2019, recently shared her concerns via social media regarding sensitive information access by private entities and political figures. Her series of tweets reflect ongoing questions about transparency and privacy in governmental financial systems.
On February 5, 2025, Rep. Escobar tweeted about her inquiry at the Treasury Department concerning Republican views on an "unelected billionaire" accessing private and sensitive information. She expressed disapproval of their stance with "Yesterday at the Treasury Department, I asked where Republicans stand on an unelected billionaire accessing your private, sensitive information. Today we got our answer: they’re ok with it."
Later that day, she posted a link without further comment or explanation "https://t.co/WDeYhrvsAU".
The following day, February 6, Rep. Escobar questioned former President Trump and Elon Musk's lack of explanation regarding their access to the Treasury's federal payment system. She highlighted concerns about handling trillions of dollars annually in transactions involving Social Security and Medicare benefits and tax credits with "Neither Trump nor Musk have explained how getting into the Treasury's federal payment system - accessing sensitive information including Social Security and Medicare benefits and tax credits -- which handles trillions of dollars annually, will provide 'transparency.'"
