Rep. Veronica Escobar, a U.S. Congress member representing Texas’ 16th district, has recently shared her concerns regarding the El Paso Independent School District's (EPISD) proposed school closures and addressed funding issues impacting local education. Additionally, she extended birthday wishes to the President of the United States.
On November 19, 2024, Rep. Escobar stated that she had spoken with Daniel Sayavedra from EPISD and requested that the school board delay its decision on closing schools scheduled for the following day. She highlighted that "the list of schools to be closed was just announced on 10/17," and her office received over 1,200 messages from constituents whose concerns needed addressing. "I spoke with @DsayavedraEPISD today and asked that the @EPISD school board delay tomorrow's school closure decision."
In another tweet posted shortly after, Rep. Escobar expressed concern about underfunding in all of El Paso’s Independent School Districts due to withheld funds by Texas state authorities. She emphasized the negative impact this has had on "school leadership, educators and students," asserting that four weeks is insufficient time for EPISD to adequately engage with community feedback regarding budgetary decisions. "All of El Paso’s ISDs have been underfunded by Texas' withholding of money; it's been devastating for school leadership, educators and students."
On November 20, 2024, Rep. Escobar took a moment to extend personal birthday greetings to President Joe Biden via social media without further elaboration or context related to her previous posts about educational issues in El Paso."Happy Birthday, @POTUS!"
