San Elizario Independent School District issued the following announcement on Aug. 13.
The San Elizario Independent School District Transportation Department is beginning the year with the addition of five new buses to the fleet. The Transportation Department will be arriving to a stop near you in a 2021 Thomas Built Freightliner C2.
Mr. Dexter Harmon, the Supervisor for Support Services and Transportation states, "It’s always great when a school district seeks out these opportunities and is able provide the finest equipment to the students of this district. Safe, reliable, and efficient transportation are key components to a successful education program."
The purchase of these buses was made possible through a grant award from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Program. The goal of the TX VEMP grant is to help remove older model buses from aging fleets and improve overall air quality by reducing the nitrous oxide levels in our environment. The grant will cover approximately 68% of the total cost of the buses. Norberto Rivas, the Chief Financial Officer, states, “The grant would be paying $337,336 which is the difference between the $495,295 total cost less the district’s share of $157,959.”
The district will be replacing 5 older buses leaving. Overall, the district will have 41 school buses and 4 activity buses for a total of 45. The life expectancy of a school bus is between 12 to 15 years. This may vary depending on the use and the proper maintenance of the school bus.
The San Elizario ISD Transportation department presently employs 31 professional drivers and (4) bus monitors for the special education routes. The transportation team transports approximately 1,670 students in grades pre-pre-K through twelfth grade to and from school.
