U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken Wilbert Jean-Baptiste into custody, a 38-year-old convicted murderer who escaped from prison in Haiti. Jean-Baptiste was arrested on February 4 in Massachusetts after the Haitian government informed ICE that he was wanted for homicide.

Jean-Baptiste initially entered the United States illegally near Brownsville, Texas, on October 31, 2023. He was released with instructions to appear before an immigration judge from the Justice Department’s Executive Office of Immigration Review. On May 17, 2024, the judge ordered his removal to Haiti. However, Jean-Baptiste remained in the U.S., awaiting further immigration proceedings.

Patricia Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, stated: “This apprehension demonstrates ICE’s relentless commitment to pursuing fugitives and ensuring they face justice, no matter where they attempt to hide.” She added that through collaboration with international law enforcement partners, ICE ensures that "no criminal will escape accountability."

Jean-Baptiste is currently held by ICE as arrangements are made for his return to Haiti.

The public can report crimes or suspicious activities by contacting the ICE Tip Line at 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or using the online tip form.
