U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out a worksite enforcement operation at Jumbo Meat Market in Philadelphia on February 27. The operation led to the administrative arrest of four Brazilian nationals who were either unlawfully present in the United States or had violated the terms of their lawful admission.
"Worksite enforcement is a crucial component in ensuring the integrity of our nation's employment laws. By conducting these operations, we not only uphold the law but also protect the rights of legal workers and create a level playing field for businesses that comply with regulations,” stated ICE Homeland Security Investigations Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Edward V. Owens. He added, “ICE remains steadfast in its commitment to targeting employers who knowingly hire unauthorized workers, as well as those undocumented aliens who exploit the system. This worksite enforcement operation underscores our dedication to maintaining lawful employment practices and securing our nation's economic and public safety interests."
Federal law mandates employers to verify the identity and employment eligibility of all individuals they hire, documenting this information using the Employment Eligibility Verification Form, or I-9. ICE employs the I-9 inspection program to promote compliance with these laws as part of a broader strategy to address illegal employment practices. Inspections are among the most effective tools used by the federal government to ensure adherence to U.S. employment laws.
While ICE prioritizes public safety and national security threats, any individual found illegally present during an enforcement operation may be detained and processed for removal according to legal procedures.
The public can report crimes or suspicious activities by contacting the ICE Tip Line at 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or through an online tip form.
