A man from Washington has been charged with multiple offenses involving sex trafficking of children, production of child sexual abuse material, and forced labor following an investigation carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and partners in law enforcement. Jonathan Michael Atkinson, aged 34, faces 11 criminal charges as a result of the indictment returned by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Washington on April 2. The charges could lead to a prison sentence of up to life.

“Human trafficking is a heinous crime that preys on the most vulnerable members of our communities, and the most effective way we can dismantle these criminal networks is through strong partnerships,” said Matthew Murphy, acting Special Agent in Charge of HSI Seattle. Murphy emphasized the importance of cooperation among federal, state, and local law enforcement in protecting victims and bringing offenders to justice.

Atkinson was apprehended on April 8 by the Southeast Regional Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which includes members from HSI, Richland Police Department, Kennewick Police Department, and the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. Support for the arrest also came from the Pasco Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Atkinson’s arraignment in federal court is scheduled for April 10.

“The U.S. Attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Washington will continue to aggressively prosecute all versions of human trafficking,” stated Acting United States Attorney Richard Barker. He assured that efforts to seek justice for victims would persist in collaboration with various law enforcement bodies.

The investigation was conducted by the Homeland Security Investigations and the Southeast Regional Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The prosecution is being led by Assistant United States Attorneys Laurel J. Holland and Stephanie A. Van Marter.

Members of the public with information pertaining to the case are asked to contact the Pasco Police Department. Early intervention is considered crucial. Those suspecting online child sexual exploitation can call the Know2Protect Tipline or visit the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline. Urgent situations should be reported to local law enforcement and the NCMEC Tipline.

It should be noted that an indictment is an allegation, and defendants remain innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Know2Protect program is a public awareness initiative by the Department of Homeland Security focused on preventing and reporting online child sexual exploitation. More information and resources can be found on various online platforms and at know2protect.gov.
