Rep. Veronica Escobar has raised concerns on her social media platform regarding law enforcement practices and conditions faced by individuals in custody, sharing a series of accounts from September 2, 2025.

In a post dated September 2, 2025, Escobar described an incident in Florida: “One man was pulled over in Florida while on his way to buy construction supplies. Local law enforcement arrested him for driving without a license, confiscated his truck, cell phone, $1500 in cash that belonged to his construction site supervisor and he was turned over to ICE.”

On the same day, Escobar highlighted access issues for legal counsel and family members at a detention facility: “Construction had just been completed for the family and legal visitation that had been unavailable for the first 11 days of being ‘operational.’ Legal organizations couldn’t meet in person with their clients for nearly two weeks and had difficulty connecting by phone.”

She also reported complaints about medical care and food quality from detainees: “One man said he was in pain and in desperate need of surgery (saying he had urinated blood) but was only given OTC pain meds. Another was promised meds for severe allergies and never got it. All described being fed foul-smelling food and drinking water that made them sick.”

Veronica Escobar serves as a U.S. Representative. She has consistently won re-election since 2018, defeating Irene Armendariz-Jackson in the general elections of 2020, 2022, and 2024 with significant margins, after initially winning against Rick Seeberger in 2018.
