U.S. Representative Veronica Escobar shared observations on her social media account regarding recent detentions of immigrants, describing the experiences of detainees and raising concerns about their treatment.
On September 2, 2025, Escobar posted that she and her team spoke with several detainees following a large-scale detention operation: “My team and I spoke to dozens of detainees (about 1,400 men were detained on 8/28). Only one detainee had been in the U.S. for about a year; most of those I spoke to had been living and working in the U.S. for decades – one elderly man had lived in the U.S. for 37 years.”
In another post from the same day, Escobar noted the legal circumstances some men faced at the time of apprehension and referenced a facility previously closed by judicial order: “Some men had work permits that were canceled, or were in legal proceedings to adjust their status when they were apprehended. Many of the men we spoke to had come from ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ which was shut down by a federal judge, and described terrible conditions there.”
She also highlighted an individual case involving alleged racial profiling: “He’d never been arrested, wasn’t speeding or breaking the law (he was racially profiled). His U.S. citizen wife tried to get his truck, phone and the cash back, but she was told that if her husband wanted those items back, he’d have to go pick them up (he was in ICE custody).” This account detailed difficulties families face recovering personal property after detentions.
Veronica Escobar has served as a member of Congress since 2019 and has consistently won re-election against various opponents. She defeated Irene Armendariz-Jackson in general elections held in 2020, 2022, and 2024 with vote percentages ranging from approximately 59% to nearly 65%. In her initial run in 2018, Escobar prevailed over Rick Seeberger with over two-thirds of the vote.
