Rep. Veronica Escobar has raised concerns on social media regarding the actions of FCC Chairman Brendan Carr and their implications for free speech in the United States.
On September 18, 2025, Escobar stated, “Carr, who wrote the FCC chapter for Project 2025, is using his position to silence speech he disagrees with and degrade the first amendment, which guarantees and protects free speech.” In a separate post on the same day, she alleged a connection between Carr’s actions and network decisions: “The reason Jimmy Kimmel was indefinitely removed by ABC is because of FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s threat to the network to ‘do this the easy way or the hard way.'” Escobar further characterized these developments as symptomatic of broader political trends, writing, “This attack on free speech is anti-American, a violation of our constitution, and another example of the chilling and shocking rise of authoritarianism in America.”
Veronica Escobar has represented her district in Congress since 2018. She has consistently won re-election against Irene Armendariz-Jackson in recent cycles—defeating her in 2020 with 64.7% of the vote to Armendariz-Jackson’s 35.3%, again in 2022 with 63.5% to 36.5%, and most recently in 2024 with a margin of 59.5% to 40.4%. In her initial congressional race in 2018, she prevailed over Rick Seeberger with 68.5% of the vote.
These statements from Escobar come amid ongoing debates about media freedom and regulatory authority in American public life.
