There were 62 American Indian students enrolled in Socorro ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 12.7% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Socorro ISD schools welcomed 47,843 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, American Indian students comprised 0.1% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

Socorro ISD roughly covers schools within El Paso County and has a main office in El Paso.

Among the 51 schools in Socorro ISD schools, Eastlake High School recorded the highest enrollment of American Indian students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of eight students.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
