On June 29, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court’s decision on Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College, ruling race-conscious admission in higher education unconstitutional:
“Our nation was built on a bedrock of inequalities. While generations have dedicated their lives to fighting toward a more just future, the work is far from over. Race-conscious admission has always been about ensuring constitutionally granted equal protection for historically underrepresented communities and righting the wrongs of our history.
“Today’s ruling subverts those very guarantees, further embedding racial inequality in our institutions of higher education and turning our backs on America’s promise of equal and fair opportunity for all. This decision didn’t outlaw all affirmative action – legacy admissions, donation-based consideration, and more, which largely favor white students, remain intact and untouched.
“As an educator, I know every voice is valuable in the classroom, holistic admissions policies benefit all students, and ending race-conscious admission will only add more needless hurdles for those of low-income, refugee, or indigenous backgrounds. I remain committed to fighting so that all who seek to further their education will find it accessible.”
