On May 17, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) announced the winners of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition. This comes after she hosted a showcase and reception in El Paso recently in which Azenette Hernandez, a senior at Eastwood High School was chosen as the winner for her piece “Mi Querido Apa.”

“It is my pleasure to congratulate Azenette and all the aspiring young artists for enriching the 2023 Congressional Art Competition with their talent, creativity, and skills,” said Congresswoman Escobar. “I would like to thank the judges, teachers, family members, and of course, the artists for their dedication to the arts and participation in this competition. I cannot wait to see Azenette again in DC and admire her artwork in our Capitol.” 

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. This year, Congresswoman Escobar’s office had 86 pieces of art from 16 different high schools for the competition. Below you’ll find results and notable participants:

2023 Congressional Art Competition Winners:

1st Place: Azenette Hernandez, Mi Querido Apa | Eastwood High School 

2nd Place: Ivan Calderon, Artist’s Evolution | Da Vinci School for the Science & the Arts  

3rd Place: Samantha Cordero, Mexican Food Truck | Harmony Science Academy 

Honorable Mentions:

Jocelyn Duarte, Western Life | Mountain View High School 

Nqaining Tan Chen, My Apuas | Eastwood High School 

Teacher with Most Participation:  

Mr. Ramiro Ordoñez, 17 submissions | Bel Air High School
