On May 9, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) released the following statement on the upcoming end of Title 42 this week:

“I have been and remain in constant communication with local leaders in El Paso to discuss daily apprehensions, shelter space, resources, and in recent days and weeks, the growing population in and around Sacred Heart Church. This situation is similar to what we saw in December 2022, when migrants crossed the border in large numbers because of misinformation circulating through social media about what would occur near the end of Title 42.

“I will continue to be in close communication with DHS Secretary Mayorkas, our local border patrol chief, and local leaders as we monitor the enforcement activity by CBP in the area around Sacred Heart. While I am in Washington DC this week, I will continue my efforts around a bipartisan legislative solution that offers common sense reform to outdated laws and processes. Our broken immigration system hasn’t been updated in over 30 years, and only Congress can fix it.

“My immense gratitude remains with my community, one of good-will and generosity that continues to provide for vulnerable populations. Last week, while at Sacred Heart, I again saw the very best of our country reflected in volunteers, church leadership, and all who give their time.

“I'm proud to be an El Pasoan.”
