SAN ELIZARIO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT: Our Eagles Preparing To Be College and Career Ready

Graduate

San Elizario Independent School District issued the following announcement on Jan. 6.

The 2020-2021 school year has been challenging, but at Garcia-Enriquez Middle School, these challenges are opportunities. An opportunity to prepare students to be college, career, military, and future-ready. Principal Richard Salcido is bringing the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program to GEMS Middle School.  He hopes that it "Helps shift a mindset."  The AVID program is about a more equitable, student-centered approach to close the opportunity gap to prepare all students for college, career, and life. The Site-Based Decision-Making Team unanimously voted to begin implementing the program. An effective AVID program requires all the right pieces to be in place, starting with the newly selected AVID Coordinator.  It was a difficult decision with all the qualified teachers at GEMS. However, the committee chose Ms. Adriana Castruita to lead this outstanding initiative. Ms. Castruita is well respected not only with the campus but with the community. Ms. Castruita stated, "Our students deserve to feel empowered with the best tools possible, and the AVID program gives them not only the best tools but the confidence to believe that their dreams are achievable."
