City of Harlingen issued the following announcement on Dec. 19.
The Arroyo Colorado Hike & Bike Trail, popular with runners, walkers, and bikers of all ages, is about to get bigger and better. On December 22, 2020, the City of Harlingen along with the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation and the Harlingen Community Improvement Board will hold a virtual groundbreaking ceremony to officially kick-off a 1.6-mile extension of the trail.
The extension was identified as an attraction for health-conscious residents and visitors alike in the City’s 2010 Trail Master Plan, the 2016 Comprehensive Plan, and the Lower Rio Grande Valley’s 2016 Active Transportation and Tourism Plan.
The extension involves extending the existing trail 1.6 miles to the west of I-69 zigzagging along the Arroyo Colorado. It includes three pedestrian bridges and a small parking lot with handicapped spaces.
The cost of this project $1.6 million and is moving forward thanks to a grant from the Legacy Foundation for $1.2 million with the remainder coming from the Community Improvement Board.
To mark the beginning of the improvements, the City will hold a virtual Groundbreaking Ceremony on December 22 at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony can be viewed on the City’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/harlingen.
