Rep. Veronica Escobar, a U.S. Representative who has consistently won her congressional elections since 2018, recently shared her observations on social media regarding the new Camp East Montana immigration detention center. In a series of posts dated September 2, 2025, Escobar described her visits to the facility and expressed concerns about its readiness and oversight.
Escobar wrote in one post, “I first visited the day after it was declared to be ‘fully operational.’ IMO, it wasn’t ready then, and it wasn’t ready 10 days later when my team and I went back. One of the biggest issues for me: not enough federal personnel for strong oversight.” [September 2, 2025]
She also highlighted the scale and funding source of the facility in another post: “Last week, I again went to what will be the largest immigration detention center in the country, Camp East Montana. This is a $1.24 billion facility funded by Trump’s ‘one big beautiful bill’ located on Fort Bliss property. I spoke to detainees and here are my takeaways “ [September 2, 2025]
Detailing her conversations with detainees at Camp East Montana, Escobar stated: “Among the men I spoke to: a long-haul driver who worked in the U.S. for 31 years; a small business owner who owned a salon and lived in Miami for 27 years; a man who worked in construction and others. Most have U.S. citizen wives and kids, pay taxes and were part of our economy.” [September 2, 2025]
Veronica Escobar has maintained her seat as U.S. Representative through several election cycles against Irene Armendariz-Jackson—winning by significant margins in 2020 (64.7% to 35.3%), 2022 (63.5% to 36.5%), and most recently in 2024 (59.5% to 40.4%). In her initial victory in 2018 against Rick Seeberger she secured nearly seventy percent of the vote.
Camp East Montana is situated on Fort Bliss property near El Paso, Texas—a region frequently at the center of national discussions about border security and immigration policy.
