Michael Alexander Ayala-Ramirez, a 20-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador, has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for possession of firearms as a prohibited person. This sentencing follows an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and local law enforcement agencies.

U.S. District Judge Susan M. Bazis handed down the sentence on May 8, 2025, in Lincoln, Nebraska. After completing his prison term, Ayala-Ramirez will undergo three years of supervised release and face deportation from the United States.

Mark Zito, ICE Homeland Security Investigations Kansas City Special Agent in Charge, stated: “This case is a stark reminder of why strong collaboration between federal and local law enforcement is non-negotiable.” He emphasized that individuals like Ayala-Ramirez pose significant threats to public safety.

The case dates back to July 4, 2024, when a pickup truck was stolen from Denver International Airport. Two days later, Ogallala police spotted the vehicle with Ayala-Ramirez and two codefendants inside. A high-speed chase ensued across multiple counties before authorities apprehended them near Deuel County.

During the pursuit, Ayala-Ramirez and one codefendant attempted to hide with bags containing stolen firearms under another vehicle in a farmyard. The weapons included pistols from Smith & Wesson and Sig Sauer brands, along with a Glock pistol and a Del Ton DTI-15 rifle.

The third occupant fled on foot but was later captured with another stolen firearm found where he had been seated in the truck. All three defendants had previously been deported from the United States without legal permission to return.

While Ayala-Ramirez has been sentenced, cases against Pablo Escobar-Alas and Selvin Escobar-Rivera remain ongoing.

The investigation involved cooperation between ICE HSI, Nebraska State Patrol, Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, Ogallala Police Department, and Denver Police Department.
