U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken Gedion Masunsu, a 28-year-old Ugandan national, into custody in Waltham, Massachusetts. Masunsu faces charges of assault and battery on a pregnant victim and destruction of property from an incident that occurred on January 25.

“Not only is Gedion Masunsu in this country illegally, he savagely assaulted a pregnant Massachusetts resident, endangering the victim and her unborn child,” stated Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston. “We will not tolerate such acts of violence against the members of our New England communities. ICE stands firm in our commitment to prioritizing public safety by arresting and removing alien offenders from our streets.”

Masunsu’s initial attempt to enter the United States took place at Boston Logan International Airport on April 14, 2021, using an expired visa. U.S. Customs and Border Protection responded by issuing an order of expedited removal but paroled him into the country.

The Waltham Police Department arrested Masunsu on January 6 for two counts of assault and battery on a pregnant victim as well as destruction of property. Despite ICE lodging an immigration detainer with the Waltham District Court that same day, the court released Masunsu from custody.

Following his recent arrest by ICE, Masunsu remains detained under their supervision.

Members of the public are encouraged to report crimes or suspicious activities by contacting the ICE Tip Line at 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or completing an online tip form.
