U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested a 29-year-old Brazilian national in Waltham, Massachusetts. The individual was previously convicted of manslaughter in Brazil for an incident involving a motor vehicle.

The fugitive had evaded his prison sentence in Brazil, which was handed down on December 11, 2018. He was sentenced to four years, eight months, and 21 days for the crime. “This Brazilian fugitive attempted to flee justice in his home country by hiding out in Massachusetts,” stated Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston. She emphasized that ICE is committed to ensuring that New England communities do not become safe havens for criminals.

The U.S. Border Patrol initially detained the Brazilian national on November 22, 2018, after he entered the United States illegally near Hidalgo, Texas. Following his arrest, immigration officials issued an expedited removal order but released him on his own recognizance.

Currently, the Brazilian remains in ICE custody following his recent apprehension. The public is encouraged to report any crimes or suspicious activities by contacting the ICE Tip Line at 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or through their online tip form.
