Congresswoman Veronica Escobar voted in support of H.R. 747, known as the Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act, which seeks to hold the Chinese Communist Party and its affiliates accountable for the manufacturing and distribution of fentanyl.
“Serious issues facing our country require bipartisan solutions,” said Congresswoman Escobar. “Too many American families know the profound cost of the opioid epidemic, including in our community. That’s why I joined an overwhelming majority of my colleagues – Democrats and Republicans – to vote for this bill.”
The legislation aims to amend the Fentanyl Sanctions Act by broadening the definition of “foreign opioid trafficker.” This change would give the U.S. government authority to impose sanctions on Chinese individuals, organizations, and government officials who produce, sell, finance, or transport synthetic opioids or precursor chemicals; fail to implement “know-your-customer” procedures; or refuse to cooperate with U.S. counternarcotics efforts.
The bill passed in the House with a vote of 407-4.
Congresswoman Escobar has maintained her seat through several election cycles. In 2022, she won against Irene Armendariz-Jackson with 63.5% of the vote; in 2024, she again defeated Armendariz-Jackson with nearly 60% support; in 2020, she secured victory over Armendariz-Jackson with almost 65% of votes; and in 2018, she won against Rick Seeberger by a margin exceeding 68%.
