Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) addressed the recent flash flooding in Ruidoso. In her statement, she expressed sympathy for the victims, particularly noting that “two of the victims of last night’s catastrophic flash flooding in Ruidoso were the children of a service member stationed at Fort Bliss.” She extended her condolences to their families and the Fort Bliss community.
Escobar highlighted the recurring impact of natural disasters on communities like Ruidoso, which faced devastating fires just a year ago. She pointed out that these events underscore the broader issue of climate change, stating, “We’ve seen the havoc wrecked by nature and the deadly consequences of climate change across the country.”
She criticized current efforts to combat climate change as insufficient and called for more substantial federal action. “Words and social media posts remain hollow as lives are lost,” she remarked, urging Republicans in Congress to move beyond offering thoughts and prayers.
Escobar’s commitment to addressing climate change is evident through her legislative efforts. She has maintained a 98% favorable lifetime voting record from the League of Conservation Voters and introduced measures such as the Climate Adaption Plan Act. Her involvement with climate issues included membership in the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis until its dissolution in 2023.
