During the first quarter of 2026, Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home ranked as the second largest nursing home in El Paso County, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) show.

The facility offered 160 beds, 42 above the county average for nursing homes in the same period, and provided care for an average of 155.1 residents per day during the quarter.

The home received an overall rating of 2 out of 5 from CMS, which falls below the statewide nursing home average of 2.7 in Texas.

Mountain View Health and Rehabilitation led the county as the largest facility with 187 beds, while Grace Pointe Wellness Center was third with 154 beds available.

There were three public nursing homes in El Paso County, Texas, during this period.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the country’s older adult population is rising as numbers of children decline. The population aged 65 and older grew by 13% between 2020 and 2024, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. Over the past 100 years, the older adult demographic expanded substantially, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study estimates that nearly 50% of Americans in this group—about 28 million people—may need long-term services and support. The same study predicts that more than a third could ultimately require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
